- The
SESRC is committed to staying abreast of emerging technologies
and their application to social and economic research. Accordingly,
we provide our staff with the latest computer hardware and software
to facilitate their work. Currently, all center personnel use
Pentium-based computers running Windows 2000/XP Professional,
in addition to the latest versions of Microsoft Office, Corel
Suite, and other various utilities such as Norton Antivirus Corporate
Edition, Winzip, and Eudora Pro.
Our facilities are currently located
on the first floor of Wilson Hall at Washington
State University and in Suite F at the University Research
Park. Each location is equipped with two high-end network servers
designed to support over 300 simultaneous users. Through physically
separated, our two offices are able to communicate effectively
and efficiently by taking full advantage of our integrated center
Intranet.
The Research Park office is the location for the SESRC's data
collection unit. A total of seven full-time personnel (3 data
collection managers, 3 survey supervisors, and 1 network administrator),
manage an average of 100-200 student interviewers. We currently
have 51 fully functional interviewing stations, 12 of which are
used primarily for interviewer training. All interviewing stations
are equipped with Pentium-based computers, Windows 95, modems,
and telephone headsets. The CATI system currently in use is Voxco.
Our network infrastructure for all interviewer workstations supports
switched ethernet, while both NT servers connect via T100 lines.
Additionally, we have several commercial level printers that are
designed to support large-scale print jobs and the SESRC's state-of-the-art
mail surveys.
The
Wilson Hall location is the primary headquarters for our administrative,
project management, and data management units. In addition to
the staff resources described above, the center has a training
facility for both staff and interviewer training needs. The Wilson
Training center contains 14 workstations running Windows NT and
used to offer in-house trainings on various software programs.
Beginning in late summer of 2000, the SESRC Wilson Training center
will offer short courses on data management, acquisition, and
analysis using a variety of popular software packages such as
SPSS, SAS,
and STATA. Future training
plans include a "virtual training classroom" where participants
can take short courses on-line.
